We first went to La Villa Reale di Marlia before heading through the walls into the city of Lucca. This was a 15th century palazzo that was belonged to Napoleon's sister, along with an entire line of other noble families throughout the years, with beautifully designed gardens out in the middle of Toscana. It was beautiful, but I would have preferred to spend the extra time in the city of Lucca.
Once we were in the city we had a delicious Tuscan meal of pesto ravioli, pear and pecorino risotto, pappa di pomodoro, and that wonderful true unsalted delicious Tuscan bread. The bread in Genova is good but it doesn't compare to Tuscan bread, really none of the Ligurian food compares to Tuscan food in my opinion. But that is just my opinion and I'm sure many would disagree with me. Tuscan food tastes like coming home to me, perhaps because I am so fond of Toscana. And I'm really looking forward to independent travel week when we plan to visit friends in Caponnole and Castiglione Alberti. After the lunch, Holden and I went for cappuccino and gelato and skipped out on visiting more churches to do some shopping. He tried on some new jeans, but opted for a Lego instead. Then we bought some handmade chocolates to take home and met up with Giudi and Dave and the students to walk along the wall back to the bus.
And when we returned to Genova a dinner of meatballs (as Holden and I were hoping) was just sitting there awaiting our arrival!
[Thanks to everyone who is reading this blog. So many of you are reading it, yet few are leaving comments. Holden and I are really missing our friends and family and love getting messages and comments from you guys.

Thanks for these little tastes of Italy and abroad! While I can't be there with you guys I can at least keep up with your adventures and see a little it of the beauty you are experiencing. The Churches, the buildings and the landscape are all breath taking.
ReplyDeleteOf course Holden picked the lego....uncle Brian and Sebastian would be proud :-)
Thanks Julie, glad to hear from you. I'm writing some more too, Larna said your Grandma is really enjoying reading them too and that made me super happy. We've seen some beautiful cathedrals, lit a candle for your mom in Pisa. Where all did you visit when you were here? You were in Italy, right?
DeleteNo I've never made it to Italy. its a dream of mine. I've been to Portugal and Spain. I spoke with my grandma last week and she told me how much she loves hearing about your travels and seeing pictures! It definitely makes her day. Can you email me your address in Genova?
DeleteYeah, I couldn't remember. I just remember taking you to the airport! Our address is:

The walled cities - something we definitely don't have in the States but I miss from our time France! I had to look up Lucca on google maps, but now it's on my travel list!
ReplyDeleteWe were looking at pictures from the spring (in which Holden appeared), and Lauris asked when he would be back. Of course every time we are downtown Mikus point out your building! Miss you too...
Yeah, I love the walled cities too. That was actually the basis of my project when I was in Tuscany studying architecture back in 2000. I was telling Holden about Vilis the other day, and his response was, but I thought Mikus was the baby one. Still jealous of your visit to Skytop and haven't given up on finding a place to pick apples ourselves here in Italy. Maybe I'll write a blog about it soon!
DeleteLovely pictures traveling through you and Holden. Love you
ReplyDeleteThanks Gail, hope y'all are doing well! Miss you and love you!
